This morning was sunny and bright and I decided to take my mom to explore a little town I had yet to visit.
Castellfollit de la Roca is one of the smallest towns in Catalunya and it was built on these spectacular basalt cliffs.
The cliffs are the result of lava flows from volcanic eruptions thousands of years ago.
The lava became basalt when it solidified.
The little farming areas are located below the cliffs, so you can hike from the village down to the valley to see the cliffs and little garden plots.
The cliffs are located at the confluence of the Toronell and Fluvia Rivers.
We hiked down to the valley below and had a great view of the cliffs.
These houses have been here for hundreds of years and it is simply incredible.
Charlotte had a ball as she ran around the rocky path.
The village dates back to medieval times and though it is tiny, it was beautiful.
Castellfollit de la Roca is only 40 minutes from Girona, so it was a perfect morning outing.
Aurelia had a little nap on the way out there and she loved hiking around in the pack.
See that mountain waaayy out there on the right?
Rory is there right now at the start line.
The race will wind down the mountain and they will be racing over the bridge in the photo in about an hour or two.
We thought about waiting for the race once I realized it was going to be going through Castellfollit, but we could not have made it back to Girona in time to pick Eston up at school.
